Modern Drummer 2005 Readers' Poll Awards

Don't get me started. It's one of the reasons I had to quit reading that rag and come here for my drumming related info. The opinions I find here are based on the ears of people who's tastes are more in line with mine and to me have more credibility. I've always hated the music contest. Trying to say that this guy is better than that guy when they are at the same level to me is just plain laughable. LEAVE IT FOR THE GUITAR PLAYERS!!!!

Every time I watch the BRMC video with SG, VC & DW I can't help but think (because I have read some of that here) there are people who are going to try to say that Vinnie just played circles around the others or Steve has more class and less is more and all that other bullsh*t (and dosn't Dave's hair look silly?). I look at it and see three guys who have not only a deep respect for each other but a great influence on each other and sat down together and brought their own special somethings to the table and had a great time doing it. I come away learning something from all three. I don't try to determine who's the best of the three. Like I said before that sh*t is for guitar players to worry about. We're drummers, we should be above that. [img]redface.gif[/img]

I'd have to agree with the 'who cares' sentiment with regards to MD overall.

I still like to buy them though when I can. I used to subscribe a few years back too before the Day of The Internet. (Could be a movie title...)

It's got good exercises (Rock n Jazz Clinic stuff, etc etc) for most of the percussion instruments, which is something I always tried to tackle.

In the last few years though, it's awash with ads. Everywhere!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Tell me about it! I undertstand they need those ads to survive - no doubt about it, but there's got to be a limit. Then again it depends what the ad is for. If it's for Jordison and his white-coated cymbals or ugly snare then I just get angry

As for Modern Drummer in general, it used to be something I would reread from cover to cover. There used to be great interviews and articles and exercises from the greats, but in the last few years, it's not something I even glance at anymore. To be honest, I don't think ANY of the Drumming specific magazines are very good. In fact, to take it even further, I don't care much for ANY MUSIC magazine these days.

Years ago there was a great magazine called "Musician" which had great writing etc.

I guess the problem isn't really with these magazines though; They're just a product of their time, and lately, music is in a 'bad state of affairs'. Anyone who illegally downloads music or burns CDs for their friends is contributing to this downward spiral .

The only way it is going to turn around is if you BUY MUSIC THAT YOU LOVE LEGALLY! CDs aren't as expensive as they used to be, so get out there and BUY BUY BUY! Sooner or later the fever will spread.

Sorry about my rant, but I feel better now....

Haha, I feel you. Let out that rant! For over 1 year I have now been "clean" of illegally downloading music. To be honest, the excitement of running home from the record store and ripping off the wrapper and throwing in that CD makes it so much more enjoyable for me. I want to hold an album in my hands and not click and drag it on my computer screen. [img]cool.gif[/img]

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That's definitely a big part of it, but it's also knowing that you are supporting your favourite artist/performer/drummer by purchasing his/her music. I only wish that more of our favourites would just release music on their own, without all the trappings of a huge record company. Then at least we would know that most of the profit was going to them.

For another, I'm an old musician and I have no idea what the difference between most of those catagories are. I mean, do we really need different catagories for pop, rock, metal, punk and prog. It all sounds the same to me. And God knows the beats are all interchangeable. And contemporary jazz, what is that? Kenny G/Boney James jazz? Do they even use drummers. If they'd make catagories for Big Band, Bebop, and Avante Garde, that would at least make a little sense. And how on earth is an MD reader supposed to know who the best studio drummers are? Up and coming? Give me a break. And what's the point of the recorded performance catagory, are all the others supposed to be based on live performance? And conspicuously missing from this poll is any kind of latin drumming. What's up with that?

Do I just not "get" Freese's playing? I mean, from what I've heard, he's a solid rock drummer, but nothing groundbreaking or chameleon-esque, ala Vince. Anyway, besides that, I am dissapointed in the Prog category, once again. I mean, Mike's a good drummer, but look at those below him! [img]rolleyes.gif[/img]
